Every student has gone through a change from one step in their life to another, such as junior high to high school and high school to college. Well, getting ready to go from college to whatever the next step is, it is just as important as any other step you have taken. There are a lot of things college seniors should think about and do during their last year to prepare for their next part of life.
Some students wish to go on to graduate school, which means they will need to prepare in order to do so. First, seniors will need to think about where they would like to go for graduate schools. There are a lot of different graduate colleges, some are even online, but depending on the subject matter, one school may be better than another. Once they have figured out where they would like to continue their studies at, they will need to find out any and all admissions requirements, like tests or GPA information for the school and program they want to enroll in. Some students decide they want to continue their graduate courses at the same place where they got their undergraduate degree at. That is still a possible option, but student will need to apply to the graduate program even though they are already admitted as an undergrad.
Other students may want to get some experience through an internship or volunteer opportunity. While this is possible, it can be difficult at times. If you aren't planning on working while volunteering or participating in an unpaid internship, you will want to make sure all of your finances are in order before hand. Having the right experience is very important for when you do decide to get out into the job market, but you need to be able to support yourself and live. If your parents agree to you living with them, or them helping you out while you gain experience then that is a very possible option.
One of the more popular options for seniors is going straight into the work force. How you go about this may differ from person to person, job to job, and company to company. Majority of colleges have a career services center. Be sure to take advantage of this service if your college or university does have one of these centers. They can help advise you on how to create your resume, tips for interviews, and some places may even help set up a few interviews for you. Attending any career fairs on or off campus can also help you get your name out there, and gain experience applying for jobs and interviewing.
What you decide to do after you graduate college is up to you, but you do have a lot of options. Some people decide to take some time off to see the world, while others want to get started on their career or continue their education. In the end you need to do what is best for you. Just remember that you can always prepare yourself for the next step, and then change it later.
